On January the 7th, 2010, I called the number of a “Pellikaan” I’d found in one of the online American phone directories. The person listed in the directory was not at home. I left a voicemail, telling them I was doing some research for the family history. This was a guy called Thomas Gerald Pellikaan….. from there it is history!
On January 8, I received an email. Thomas Gerald responded to my voicemail.
“Johanns – What a surprise and intrigue to receive your phone message. Often I have wondered if there were ties to distant family in the homeland, but I have never pursued finding out.
I believe some of my family has though and I intend to speak with them and possibly have them share whatever information they have acquired. Hopefully, this will all lead to a renewed “family” attachment and information we all have been inquisitive of. I do know my grandfather, Charles Luke Pellikaan arrived in the United States at approximately the age of 10 (maybe 1882) and his family settled in the Western part of the State of Illinois in a village called Hardin.
He eventually married a Sadie Ferguson and they had four children; Roscoe, Roland, Ray (my father) and Leonora. The three sons raised their families in Pike County Missouri and the sister remained in Illinois. All are now deceased, but there children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren remain.
I hope to receive information from family members about their heritage and will, in some format, make that available. If possible, I may put you in contact with a cousin who has attempted to acquire family tree documents that could helpful in aligning our families. How did you locate me?
The best wished to you and the Pellicaan/Pellekaan/Pellikaan family in the Netherlands!”

I understood the great grandfather was a “Pelikan” called Bart. I send Thomas a possible match from a “Bart Pellikaan” our # 691 in the original book. The old book told us Bart died in Iowa (USA) on the 29th of March 1920 and that he was married 3 times, but no children. The next happened: Thomas contacting his cousin Rosalind…..
“Hi Johan,
Bart Pellikaan was married to a Katrina Rosa. His real name was Lambartis and they called him “Bart”. In my records from a local newspaper in Calhoun County, Illinois, I found a paragraph recording the fact that he had died. I do not recall the year or issue of the newspaper, but it is in my records stored in my basement. I will look it up and see his date of death. Thank you for contacting us!”
Regards,
Rosalind Pellikaan
This information was of course extremely helpful. Now I could refine my search on the available data and look for a “Lambertis” (knowing this was spelled very likely as “Lambertus”), married to a woman called Katrina Rosa. It to a bit of fantasy, however within 10 minutes after I received this information, I was able to make the link.
It was no Bart, but Lambertus, #1454 in the old book, who was the one who came to the USA. Lambertus married Jocomina van der Nat (unknown of Jacomina and Lambertus divorced or if she died). He married for the second time with Catharina Roza. They had a daughter “Maria” who was baptized in 1853 in Woudrichem.
“Hi Johan,
How exciting! I wish I could read the whole thing, but, of course, I do not know the language. If you can give me an idea of what it says, that really makes it interesting. I never thought I would be able to “cross the ocean” with my Pellikaan family tree and I am so excited about the news you are sending me. I believe some of the “Rosa (Roza) family was already in Calhoun County, Illinois before Bart and “Katrina” arrived.
I have some of their information from old censuses. One of Bart’s sons, Henry Pellikaan had a daughter named “Rosa” and I met with her several times about 20 years ago. She would be deceased by now. Anyway, Rosa was very interested in the family history and wrote letters to a lady in California who had been adopted by Bart and Katrina when they came to America by boat. This lady’s parents died at sea, so Bart and Katrina took her in. At the moment, her name escapes me, but I have her name in my records at home. Bart and Katrina raised her as their own child and she knew all about their background. Seemingly after the family reached America a man asked Bart for his ticket so that he could get their trunks from the ship, but the man ran off with everything they had and that left the family stuck with no way to get to their relatives in Illinois. Supposedly Bart and Katrina had accumulated quite a bit. Imagine how devastating! Another acquaintance or relative who knew Bart happened to see him walking down the street and helped them get to Illinois somehow. Quite a story!
I don’t know if my cousin, Tom Pellikaan, told you, but I teach elementary children reading. I am at school early this morning to get a few extra things done before the kids get here. I will correspond with you as often as possible, but I am using the school’s computer access, so I may not get back with you daily. I am looking forward to hearing from you and will make every attempt to delve into my family tree information this weekend.
Thanks for the latest information.”
